Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between you and an architect?

An architect is a licensed design professional who works with their clients in the capacity of a design specialist.  They can work with their clients to determine popular design styles, interior space designs, and design specifications.  In addition, they are able to act in a structural design capacity and can stamp and sign off on drawing sets.  While we're always happy to work with our clients to help flesh out their vision, we tend to stick to the "Drafting" aspect of the design process.  (Putting pen to paper, so to speak).  Once we have an architectural drawing set completed, we'll send the package off to a structural engineer to review and approve.  Of course, their involvement depends upon the project in question.  Some small projects don't require a structural review.

How long does it take to complete a set of drawings?

We always aim to complete a project as expeditiously as possible.  However, our speed is highly dependent on the size and complexity of the project.  If you already have a rough layout determined and just want to put pen to paper, so to speak, we can turn out a set of drawings in a week or less.  Larger commercial projects can potentially last months at a time.  Contact us today to discuss your plans and we can determine an appropriate time frame for your project.

How much does it cost?

Drafting fees are generally determined based on the estimated time of completion, number of sheets, and complexity of the project.  Plan requirements vary from county to county, so a small bathroom remodel in one city may only require 2 or 3 drawing sheets but may require a full set of construction documents in a neighboring city.  Regardless, we pride ourselves on being highly competitive in comparison to similar drafting firms.

What if I want to make change to the drawings after design has begun?

Our revision process is determined on a case by case basis.  Typically, the client has unlimited access to our team throughout the design process.  We will work hand in hand with you until you're satisfied with what you see.  Once drawings have been completed however, you will have the opportunity to review and revise your plans a maximum of two times, after which we will require additional service fees to continue.

What design software do you use?

We rely heavily on the use of Autodesk products such as AutoCAD and Revit for most of our projects, but programs such as Sketchup, Fusion, Bluebeam, and 3ds Max are all in our repertoire.  JBB Drafting + Design is dedicated to always learning of new and better ways to provide top shelf service to our clients.

Does my project have to be in California?

In a word, no.  While we are based out of northern California, the nature of our business allows us to extend our services to nearly anywhere in the world.  However, some requests may require us to do a bit of research into the building codes and documentation requirements for your city which could mean additional time or fee to complete a project.
